Man appears in court charged with possessing 9,000 child porn images

A man has appeared in court charged with possessing 9,000 indecent images of children.
David Carey is charged with nine offences including possessing animal porn as well as thousands of indecent images of children, some of which are alleged to be ‘extreme’.
The 33-year-old appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates’ for a brief hearing before his case was sent to crown court.
Carey, of Langdale Close, Longbenton, spoke only to confirm his name and tell the court his date of birth and address.
He withheld his plea to the nine charges which include distributing and making indecent images.
Laura Lax, prosecuting, said the alleged offences took place between November 1 2012 and February 25 2016 at his home.
She said the charges related to photos and movies allegedly found on a phone, memory stick and lap top.
Ms Lax said: ‘These charges are not suitable to be dealt with at this court
.
‘There’s a number of charges. It’s allegedly about 9,000 images and some are extreme.
‘There’s also a charge of distribution of a small amount of category A images.
‘It’s clearly beyond any potential sentencing powers of this court.’
The case has been sent to Newcastle Crown Court, where Carey is due to appear on February 1.
He has been granted conditional bail until then.
