Trump companies owe $650 million, says report

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Bill Pugliano/Getty Images/AFP
Companies belonging to Donald Trump have at least $650 million in debt, more than twice the amount shown in public filings made by his presidential campaign, the New York Times reported Saturday.
The paper employed a property information firm to search publicly available data on more than 30 US properties connected to the Republican candidate, including offices and golf courses.
In addition to the $650 million liabilities, “a substantial portion of his wealth is tied up in three passive partnerships that owe an additional $2 billion to a string of lenders,” the Times said about debt that could significantly affect Trump’s wealth.
The billionaire tycoon campaigns on what he says is his spectacularly successful real estate record, claiming to be worth $10 billion and citing his business acumen as his major qualification for the presidency.
However, he has dismissed mounting pressure even from within his own party to disclose his tax returns or allow an independent valuation of his assets.
Trump’s campaign filings show his businesses owed at least $315 million, the Times noted, saying they appear to be accurate and that Trump was not required to disclose all of his business activities.
Although the paper does not accuse him of any wrongdoing, the investigation “underscored how much of Mr Trump’s business remains shrouded in mystery.”
The probe “also found that Mr Trump’s fortunes depend deeply on a wide array of financial backers, including one he has cited in attacks during his campaign,” the Times said.
His lenders include one of the largest banks in China — which the Republican candidate accuses of being a US economic foe — and the investment bank Goldman Sachs, which he says influences his Democratic White House rival Hillary Clinton.

As president, the Times said, Trump would be able to make decisions that would have a major influence on his business empire and net worth.

We lack powers to withdraw Benue Speaker’s Certificate of Return —INEC

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu
Aviashima Toom
The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Saturday that it has no locus standi to withdraw the Certificate of Return of the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, who it described as a “validly elected candidate.”
INEC stated this in a position paper presented to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Public Petitions, following a petition from a Law firm, J.I Abaagu & Co on behalf of the people of Ushongo Local Government Area.
In the petition, the law firm alleged that INEC had refused to obey the Order of the Federal High Court compelling the commission to restore an additional constituency in Ushongo and conduct elections in the two constituencies.
It further noted that the court order required the creation of two constituencies in the local government “by whatever name called” and conduct election in each of them, adding that both processes would entail the creation of legal entities regarding the two constituencies, as well as the election of lawmakers.
But INEC argued that doing so would require compliance with the procedures for delimiting constituencies as stated in Sections 112, 113 and 114 (1) and (2), which outline conditions for the exercise.
While noting that the court did not order the commission to act arbitrarily, INEC stated that it had no power to nullify Ikyange’s election on the basis of the ruling of the Federal High Court in November, which ordered it to restore the suppressed Mbagwa constituency.
The commission further stated that the petition called for an elected member to be split into two, adding that the case determined by the court was neither a pre-election matter involving a candidate nor an election petition tribunal or appeal.
INEC also cited Section 68 (c) of the Electoral Act (as amended), which stipulates that once a declaration is made by a returning officer, only a “tribunal or court in an election petition proceeding” can set it aside.
The electoral body added that Section 133 of the Electoral Act required that “the person elected or returned is joined as a party” and that Ikyange was not a party to the case.
INEC warned that any attempt by the commission to tamper with his mandate may trigger litigation against it, which may lead to a delay in the enforcement of the court order.

Brazil win first ever Olympic football gold

Brazil's players, including forward Neymar (2R) celebrate on the podium during the medal presentation following the Rio 2016 Olympic Games men's football gold medal match between Brazil and Germany at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 20, 2016. Neymar struck the winning penalty as Brazil claimed a first ever Olympic football gold medal with victory over Germany at the Maracana on Saturday.
Neymar struck the winning penalty as Brazil claimed a first ever Olympic football gold medal with victory over Germany on penalties at Rio’s Maracana on Saturday.
The 5-4 shoot-out win exacted revenge for a humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany two years ago.
Olympic gold was the only major title to have escaped five-time world championsBrazil in their history.
But Barcelona star Neymar righted that historical wrong as he fired the winning penalty into the top corner before breaking into tears.
In front of the biggest crowd of Rio’s Games, including nine-time Jamaican gold medallist Usain Bolt, Neymar’s brilliant free-kick handed Brazil a first-half lead.
In honour of the retiring sprinting great, Neymar even adopted the “lightning bolt” celebration, whilst chants of “ole, ole, ole, Neymar” rang around Rio’s most iconic arena.
However, Germany captain Max Meyer enjoyed a special celebration of his own as he taunted the raucous 78,000 crowd at the Maracana by kissing the number seven on his shirt when he swept home Jeremy Toljan’s cross just before the hour mark.
The first eight penalties in the shootout were all successful before Brazilgoalkeeper Weverton stopped Nils Petersen’s effort to set the stage for Neymar.
And he didn’t disappoint as, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders, he rifled the ball into the top corner.
In stark contrast to the empty seats on show across the Games, even at times when Bolt has been running, there wasn’t a seat to be had at the Maracana — where Germany won the World Cup against Lionel Messi’s Argentina two years ago.
However, it was for the 7-1 mauling in Belo Horizonte five days previously thatBrazil were seeking revenge.
None of the players that took to the field that day started on Saturday.
Neymar missed the darkest day in Brazil‘s football history due to two broken bones in his back suffered during a bruising quarter-final win over Colombia.
Yet, the good fortune that escaped Brazil on home soil two years ago was certainly with them in the first-half as Germany were desperately unlucky to go in behind at the break.
Julian Brandt’s fine curling effort came back off the bar, whilst Sven Bender also hit the woodwork from close range.
In between times, Neymar had opened the scoring via the bar with a sumptuous dipping effort from 25 yards for his third goal of the tournament.
Weverton made a fine save from Meyer and Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos was fortunate when his mishit clearance flew inches over his own crossbar.
However, Weverton was beaten for the first time in the competition just before the hour mark when Meyer swept home Toljan’s low cross.
Brazil piled on the pressure in the final half hour of normal time as Gabriel Jesus turned Renato Augusto’s dangerous cross just wide, substitute Felipe Anderson fluffed his lines and Neymar’s effort from distance flew just off target.
The hosts had the better chances in extra-time too as Luan burst clear only to see his shot blocked before Anderson was denied when one-on-one with Horn.
Thankfully for Rogerio Micale’s men they were far more clinical from the spot as Augusto, Marquinhos, Rafinha and Luan all netted to hand Neymar the chance to live up to his billing as the host’s poster boy for the Games.

The video follows the release of his new visual album, “Endless”

Following Friday’s release of Frank Ocean’s visual album Endless, a representative for the R&B singer told fans to “Keep an eye out this weekend for more from Frank.” Right on cue, this morning brought the release of a new song not appearing on Endless.
The track is entitled “Nikes”, but it’s in no way a tribute to the Swoosh. Rather, Frank critiques materialism, self-indulgence, and the artificial existence of celebrity culture. He sings (in a particularly high pitch), “All you want is Nikes (Yeah)/ But the real one’s just like you (Tell these niggas)/ Just like me (Tell these guys you ain’t basic).” The song’s accompanying music video, meanwhile, takes place at a lavish party where clothes are optional, drugs are excessive, and where there’s a rapping chihuahua.

The track also hears Frank honor ASAP Yams, Pimp C, and Trayvon Martin.
Watch the video below,. Presumambly, “Nike” is the first preview of Frank’s second new studio album, due out sometime this weekend.

McGregor-Diaz feels like a WWE feud

Seth Rollins joins SportsCenter to talk about Conor McGregor's comments about WWE and welcomes McGregor to come and step in the WWE ring to see what he could do. (0:59)

LAS VEGAS -- The lines were blurred long before Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz turned their news conference into a water-bottle-throwing contest.
The responses on social media after both fighters transformed the David Copperfield Theater at MGM Grand into a high school cafeteria only confirmed what many in attendance were thinking at the time.
Is this the UFC, or the WWE?
Everyone knew something would happen when McGregor and Diaz took the stage Wednesday for their final news conference before UFC 202 on Saturday, but what unfolded seemingly veered into the realm of scripted television and felt more forced than natural and organic. The news conference began ominously without McGregor, and White left to answer questions about his absence.
"We're starting without him," he said. "He has to start respecting people's times, man. Yours, theirs, mine, David Copperfield's, everybody's."
Of course, like in all good scripted dramas, McGregor's absence tied back to a major plot in this rivalry. McGregor and Diaz were slated to headline UFC 200 last month, but that was scraped when McGregor failed to show for a promotional news conference and subsequently "retired" on Twitter.
It was hard not to think about that as McGregor's UFC featherweight championship belt sat alone in front of his nameplate on the stage with White and Diaz visibly upset by his absence.
"I don't care," Diaz said when asked about McGregor. "It's rude."
McGregor eventually arrived about 30 minutes late and didn't waste any time going in on Diaz and his team before Diaz got up and left the stage. As Diaz walked to the back of the theater to join his team, he shouted at McGregor, "Hey, f--- your whole team, how about that?"
"F--- your whole team," McGregor yelled back. "You'll do nothing. Shut your f---ing mouth. You'll do nothing. You'll do f---ing nothing. Not one of you will do nothing. Get the f--- out of here."
That's when water bottles started flying and the media seated in the middle of the action, dodging flying objects, felt like they were at a Gallagher show with the mess that was being made around them.
Moments after the incident, the UFC's Instagram account posted a video splicing up film of McGregor and Diaz throwing water bottles at each other with the viral #WaterBottleChallenge hashtag. Later that night, White tweeted out the latest episode of "UFC 202: Embedded." The all-access show captured McGregor watching the press conference on his iPhone while being driven to the MGM Grand. It also showed multiple angles of the water-bottle-throwing incident from both fighters flipping each other off to White saying, "That's a wrap. Get them out of here... Sorry guys, see you Saturday."
It was the perfect promotional video for a fight that, coming into Wednesday, hadn't attracted the buzz most expected it would. More than 2,700 seats remained unsold for the fight before the news conference according to ESPN.com's Darren Rovell, and many secondary-market ticket-distribution companies were beginning to sell tickets at below face value.
Fighters and promoters trying to hype a fight is nothing new, but there's a flair for the dramatic whenever McGregor is involved. His penchant for pontificating and promoting is more WWE than UFC. It's no accident that shorty after sending out his retirement tweet, he started following WWE executives Stephanie McMahon, Shane McMahon and Paul "Triple H" Levesque.
In fact, leading up to his fight with Diaz he has probably spent more time trash-talking WWE wrestlers than his opponent on Saturday.
"For the most part, those WWE guys are p-----s, to be honest," McGregor said in a conference call leading up to UFC 202 when asked about the WWE. "They're messed up p-----s, if you ask me. Fair play to Brock [Lesnar], he got in and fought, but at the end of the day he was juiced up to the f---ing eyeballs, so how can I respect that?"
McGregor later took to Twitter to clarify or perhaps double down on his comments about the WWE, and many WWE superstars responded to McGregor, who had successfully cross-promoted himself and his fight on Saturday to wrestling fans.
"It sounds to me like Conor is trying to take a page out of our game and trying to sell a couple more pay-per-views before Saturday," former WWE champion Seth Rollins said on SportsCenter. "It's just Conor being Conor. He's doing his thing. If he's serious about it, the guy is 5-6, 145 or whatever he walks around at, I don't know. I'm a full size human being so if he wants to come around and try to slap the face off me or whatever insult he's got for the day by all means come and step into our ring and see what you got."
Lesnar, who was a co-main event for UFC 200 and later tested positive for a banned substance, will now be a co-main event for WWE SummerSlam on Sunday in Brooklyn. He is the biggest name on a growing list of athletes trying their hands in both WWE and UFC. Former WWE champion C.M. Punk will make his UFC debut next month at UFC 203. Ronda Rousey is an avid WWE fan and made an in-ring appearance at WrestleMania in 2015. The WWE has expressed interest in the UFC's Paige VanZant.
Outside of the Las Vegas Fight Shop, nestled inside of the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, there is a cardboard cutout of McGregor on one side of the door and one of John Cena on the other. Inside, UFC merchandise ranging from shirts and dolls to posters and replica belts, are sold next to WWE merchandise -- also ranging from shirts and dolls to posters and replica belts. The store first opened as a kiosk selling MMA merchandise a decade ago, but has since grown in scale and stature -- adding pro-wrestling merchandise, which now accounts for about a third of the store's sales.
"I think there is a blending of the fan bases, and it's a wonderful thing," said Irv Culpepper, a 48-year-old fight fan who works at the store. "We cater to fans of combat sports, whether it's professional wrestling or mixed martial arts. Most fans loved that press conference. It's all about promoting, promoting, promoting and when you're done, promoting some more. Without that, without the fans, we don't exist as a shop."
McGregor and Diaz's performance at the news conference felt like a page out of the WWE in-ring, contract-signing script playing out in the "real" world, which shouldn't come as a surprise. When it comes to promoting their fights, the UFC and the WWE are both working off the same script -- and often times trying to attract the same fans.
No one wants to watch a fight, whether it's in the WWE or UFC, that's devoid of any conflict, so you have to give the fans what they want. For every fan that that compared the McGregor-Diaz press conference to a WWE show or said it was staged, there were at least 10 times as many that became more interested in the fight as a result of what happened. The promotional comparisons, however, end when both fighters step into the Octagon on Saturday.
"This ain't no gimmick," McGregor said. "This is the real s---. I've gotta get in and fight a man for real with no script, with no nothing."
After Saturday, however, maybe McGregor can do something about the feud he has started with WWE wrestlers and further blur the lines between both companies.
"This is the real s--- over here," McGregor said. "You want to come over, we can fight, no problem. A few of them are talking about the street and all. If they want to do that, come at me and see what happens."

Over 20,000 rescued from Boko Haram captivity —Buratai

Chief-of-Army-Staff-Lt-Gen-Tukur-Buratai
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Saturday said the Nigerian military had so far rescued over 20,000 persons kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents.
According to Buratai, who said this shortly after inaugurating the Nigerian Army Officers Wife Association’s Day Care, Nursery and Primary School at Ribadu Cantonment, Kaduna, the military remained resolute in not only rescuing those abducted by the insurgents, but rooted the criminals out completely.
The army chief frowned on calls by Nigerians to dialogue with the insurgents in the North-East.
He appealed to Nigerians to provide useful information that could boost the rescue operations and noted that the move by the Federal Government to negotiate with the insurgents would not stop the military’s rescue operations.
He said, “We have so far rescued over 20,000 abducted persons and we are still rescuing more.
“We will continue to carry out our rescue operations; as far as the Army and indeed the military is concerned, we will continue to play our own part.
“The negotiation is left for the appropriate arm of government, but we are looking for (relevant) information to rescue anybody that is being held hostage.”
The Army boss had earlier visited the headquarters of One Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna, where he had a closed-door meeting with officers and men of the division.

Dependence on importation not good for Nigeria – Abdulsalami

A former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.) says overdependence on importation is not good for Nigeria.
Abubakar spoke on Saturday in Nnewi, Anambra State, while inaugurating some projects for some private firms.
He expressed optimism that the entrepreneurial spirit of Nnewi businessmen in the state had the potential to grow the country’s economy.
He stressed that any country dependent on importation was doomed.
Abubakar, during a tour of some factories in Nnewi, commended the entrepreneurial spirit of Chickason Group, Innoson Motors and others in the state.
He urged industrialists in the state not to relent, saying he will advance their cause at the appropriate quarters.
“What is happening in this community gives hope for this country,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Chickason Group, Chika Okafor, lamented the dearth and high rate of foreign exchange.
Okafor said, “Government should support us in Nnewi. This is the only town that has grown to what it is today with 99 per cent contribution from indigenes, and almost nothing from the government.
“We face several challenges, but the most pressing ones are power and foreign exchange for the procurement of raw materials. We use 175,000 litres of diesel every week. We are managing to sustain the factory from what we make from other businesses.”

Omran Daqneesh's brother Ali 'has died in Aleppo'

Site of air strike in rebel-held Qaterji district of Aleppo, Syria, where five-year-old Omran Daqneesh was rescued (18 August 2016)

The elder brother of Omran Daqneesh, the Syrian boy whose dazed and bloodied image shocked the world, has died of wounds sustained when the family home in Aleppo was bombed, activists say.
The Syria Solidarity Campaign said 10-year-old Ali "passed away today due to his injuries from the bombing of his house by Russia/Assad".
Russian and Syrian jets have carried out heavy raids on rebel-held areas.
Omran, five, was filmed caked in dust and blood after his home was hit.
The pictures - symbolising the suffering of Aleppo's trapped civilians - caused worldwide outrage.
An unidentified witness in Aleppo quoted by Reuters news agency said Ali Daqneesh had suffered internal bleeding and organ damage after the 17 August bombing.
And a tweet from Kareem Shaheen, a Middle East reporter, said: "Have confirmed with Omar Daqneesh's doctor, his older brother died from wounds sustained during strike that wounded Omran".
Aleppo, once Syria's commercial and industrial centre, has been divided roughly in two since 2012, with the government controlling the west and rebels the east.

Gaziantep, which is mainly Kurdish, is 64km (40 miles) from the Syrian border.
Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek called the attack "barbaric" but said: "God willing, we will overcome."
It happened in a part of the city where many university students live, after a wedding party spilled out on to the streets. The blast was heard across town.

Was IS behind this? Mark Lowen, Istanbul

No group has said it was behind the bombing - but government sources say it could have been carried out by so-called Islamic State, which is known to have operatives in the border city of Gaziantep.
Turkey has been hit by a series of bombs both by IS and Kurdish militants in the past year, with the last IS attack on Istanbul airport in June, killing more than 40 people.
The jihadists have recently lost ground in northern Syria, including a former stronghold, Manbij. Syrian rebel soldiers are preparing to advance further into the IS-held province of Jarablus.
If this bomb was the work of IS, there will be speculation it is a revenge attack, intended as a show of strength by a group on the defensive.

The BBC's Seref Isler, who is from Gaziantep, said the attack "took place in a city that is already on edge because of what's happening right across the border" but was even more shocking because a wedding party was targeted.
He said: "Weddings are in Turkey considered sacred and very happy occasions, so to intentionally turn it in to a bloodbath has received some very staunch criticism to say the least.
"Turkish society seems to have been horrified that this has targeted specifically a wedding, what should have been the happiest day of this couple's lives."
People gather near the explosion site on August 20, 2016 in Gaziantep following a late night militant attack on a wedding party in southeastern Turkey.Southern Turkey has been hit by several deadly blasts over the past year, linked either to Kurdish separatist militants or so-called Islamic State (IS).
Often the attacks were linked to developments in the war raging in Syria.
A suicide bomber believed to have links to IS killed two policemen in Gaziantep in May.
In northern Syria, just south of Gaziantep, there has been heavy fighting between IS jihadist militants and Syrian Kurdish forces known as the YPG.
The border town of Kobane was wrested back from IS control by Kurdish-led forces in January 2015, after months of bitter fighting.
There has been a spate of bombings in eastern Turkey in recent months blamed on the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Earlier on Saturday, Turkey's government said the country would take a more active role in efforts to end the war in Syria. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said a future political settlement for Syria must not include Mr Assad, the PKK or IS.
"In the six months ahead of us, we shall be playing a more active role," Mr Yildirim said. "It means not allowing Syria to be divided along ethnic lines."

Bin Laden raid bestseller's author to pay $7m

Copies of a book by former Navy SEAL titled No Easy Day are seen on display at a bookstore in Washington, DC
A former US Navy Seal who wrote a bestseller about his role in the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden is to pay nearly $7m (£5m) to the government for violating non-disclosure agreements.
Matt Bissonette failed to get clearance from the Pentagon before the book No Easy Day was published in 2012.
He has agreed to forfeit all profits and royalties, as well as film rights and speaking fees.
In exchange, the government will dismiss other liability claims.
The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a May 2011 Navy Seal raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and his body was buried at sea.

Navy Seals - special operations commandos - usually abide by a code of silence and do not publicly take credit for their actions.
In the settlement filed at a district court in the state of Virginia, Mr Bissonette acknowledged he had failed to submit his book for review ahead of publication.
He also apologised, saying in a statement that he had acted on the incorrect advice of his lawyer.
"It was a serious error that I urge others not to repeat," CBS news quoted him as saying.
"Although I never intended to endanger my former colleagues, I now recognise that failing to seek pre-publication review could place them and their families at greater risk, for which I especially apologise."

The former commando, who wrote under the pseudonym Mark Owen, will have four years to pay the bulk of the money to the government, according to the Associated Press news agency.
He has 30 days to pay $100,000 made from presentations he gave using slides that were not approved by the Pentagon, it says.

His account of the Abbottabad raid has been questioned by another member of the elite Seal Team 6 unit that carried out the operation, who has a different version of how Bin Laden was shot dead.

Footballers not entitled to bonuses in Rio — Dalung

Youth and Sports minister Solomon Dalung has stated that the national U-23 football team were not entitled to receive match bonuses at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The team, who qualified for the semi-finals after beating Denmark 2-0 on Saturday, had threatened to boycott the quarter-final match against the Danes if their outstanding allowances and the five months salaries owed coach Samson Siasia were not paid.
Dalung said the team’s outstanding camp allowances for 11 days were paid on Saturday.
Dalung stated, “I spoke with the captain of the team Mikel Obi and I explained to him that match bonuses are only paid to players during the World Cup or Africa Cup of Nations but not at the Olympic or Commonwealth Games. This is their first appearance at the Olympics so the players may not know that they don’t pay match bonuses at the Games.
“We have paid all outstanding camp allowances for the Rio Games to the players so we owe them nothing. On Siasia, the federation has admitted that they owe him five months salaries. He was owed before he agreed to take the team to Atlanta, so making it an issue now after qualifying for the quarter-finals is not in the interest of the country. I have appealed to the coach and the players to put the country first before personal interest. All other issues that need to be addressed will definitely be addressed after the Olympics,” the minister said.

A knifeman set fire to a train in north-eastern Switzerland

A knifeman has set fire to a train in north-eastern Switzerland, leaving six people in hospital with stab wounds and burns, police say.
The suspect, described as a Swiss man aged 27, was also taken to hospital after the incident near Salez in St Gallen canton, close to Liechtenstein.
He had ignited a flammable liquid before attacking people with a knife.
A child of six was injured. Police said they could not exclude the possibility of a terrorist motive.
"We can neither exclude nor affirm that this was a terrorist act," St Gallen regional police spokesman Bruno Metzger told the local St Galler Tagblatt daily.
Police spokesman Hanspeter Kruesi told AFP news agency the suspected attacker was not of immigrant background.
Three rescue helicopters are at the scene. A major police operation is under way.
The attack occurred around 14:20 (12:20 GMT) as the train was approaching Salez station, between the towns of Buchs and Sennwald.
Several dozen passengers were on board at the time of the attack.
Apart from the child, a girl and a boy, both 17, two women aged 34 and 43, and a man aged 50 were hurt.
Some of the injured are said to be in a serious condition.
Police estimated damage to the train at CHF100,000 (£79,000; $103,000).
European states have been on the alert for "lone wolf" attacks after a series of recent incidents.
Last month, an Afghan asylum seeker attacked passengers on a train in the neighbouring German state of Bavaria with an axe, injuring four people.
The so-called Islamic State later claimed the attack, releasing a video of the attacker who was shot dead by police as he fled.

Imam among two shot dead in Queens, New York

Police in New York say an imam and another man were shot dead as they walked along a street in the borough of Queens.
The men were approached from behind by a man who shot them both in the head, a police spokesman said.
Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, moved to the city from Bangladesh two years ago, reports in New York said.
Police said there were as yet "no indications" the men were targeted because of their faith.
A man holding a gun was seen leaving the scene of the shooting in the Ozone Park area, but no-one has been arrested.
The imam and the second man, who was aged 64, were shot a short walk from the al-Furqan Jame mosque at about 13:50 local time (17:50 GMT) on Saturday.
The second man was named by media as the imam's assistant at the mosque. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
A number of people from the nearby Muslim community have gathered at the scene to demonstrate, saying the shooting was a hate crime, although police said they were still investigating the motive.
"We feel really insecure and unsafe in a moment like this," Millat Uddin, who lives near the mosque, told CBS New York. "It's really threatening to us, threatening to our future, threatening to our mobility in our neighbourhood, and we're looking for the justice."
Friends of Imam Akonjee told media he had just left the mosque after prayers when he was shot.
"He would not hurt a fly," his nephew Rahi Majid, told the New York Daily News. "You would watch him come down the street and watch the peace he brings."

Katie Ledecky breaks 800-free mark, wins 4th gold of Rio Games

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Katie Ledecky delivered another dominating performance at the Rio Games, handily breaking the world record in the 800 freestyle Friday.
Ledecky joined Debbie Meyer as the only women to sweep the three longer freestyle events at the same Olympics. Meyer took the 200, 400 and 800 at the 1968 Mexico Games, and Ledecky matched that performance with a couple of world records as well.
Ledecky was merely racing the clock as she powered away from the field to touch in 8 minutes, 4.79 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 8:06.68 that she set at a grand prix meet in Texas back in January.
Then she waited for the rest of the field to finish.
Jazz Karlin finally touched in 8:16.17 to claim the silver, just ahead of Hungary's Boglarka Kapas, who grabbed the bronze in 8:16.37.
Some 23 seconds after Ledecky touched the wall, the last of the eight finalists finally ended the grueling race.
Ledecky also became the third American woman to win four gold medals in a single Olympics, following fellow swimmers Amy Van Dyken and Missy Franklin.
Also Friday, Maya DiRado denied Katinka Hosszu's bid to become a four-time gold medalist at the Rio Olympics.
Hosszu got off to a blistering start and led almost the entire race. But DiRado rallied furiously on the final lap and beat Hosszu at the touch to win in 2 minutes, 5.99 seconds.
DiRado couldn't believe what she had done in her one and only Olympics. She put her hands on her cap in disbelief when she saw her name on top of the scoreboard.
Hosszu settled for silver in 2:06.05, and Canada's Hilary Caldwell took the bronze in 2:07.54.

Messy expose into Nigeria’s annual N4.6bn sports budget

Nigeria’s participation at this year’s Olympic Games in Brazil exposes some fundamental flaws in sports administration and development in the country despite a whopping annual budget writes Eric Dumo
It took the screams of a few young men around 11:41pm last Sunday for Deji Bello to know that something big was going on. A follower of major events in the country, the 38-year-old businessman still wonders how he missed this particular one. Overwhelmed by the quest to survive in the face of mounting economic and social challenges, the Kwara State-born father of two, like many Nigerians, was too carried away to realise that the Olympic Games, sports biggest spectacle, had begun in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, three days earlier. On the fateful night the screams from a handful of young men at a viewing centre near his house woke him up from bed, Bello had missed Nigeria’s first football match at the competition against Japan – a high scoring encounter which the Under 23 Eagles led by Samson Siasia won 5-4 despite arriving Brazil few hours before kickoff, and was midway into missing the second match against Sweden as well. Nigeria went on to win that game and qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament.
However, unlike in previous years, much of Nigeria’s participation at the global sporting event this year has almost been greeted with apathy by many across the country. According to sports enthusiast, Jimi Bankole, the lack of interest among the populace might not be unconnected to the several controversies that trailed Team Nigeria in the build up to the opening ceremony of the games last week.
“There has been nothing really inspiring about Nigeria’s participation at the Olympic Games this year. Apart from the fact that our boys qualified for the quarterfinals of the football event, it has generally been from one controversy to another. Most of the athletes had it very tough getting to the event, even the men’s soccer team that is perhaps our only hope of picking up a medal at the competition only arrived Brazil just hours before they were to play their opening match. It is so bad that even the outfit the contingent was supposed to wear for the opening ceremony did not arrive Brazil until after that period, forcing our representatives to appear in ordinary track suits. This is not only embarrassing but also a major dent on our image as a nation.
“As far as I am concerned it is all of these factors that have combined to ensure that a lot of Nigerians are not showing interest in how our athletes are faring at the competition as much as they should have. It is a sad commentary on the state of sports in this country,” Bankole said during a chat with our correspondent earlier in the week.
Participating in a total of 10 sports at the event in Brazil – athletics, basketball (male), boxing, canoeing (slalom), football (male), rowing, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling, the chances of Nigeria surpassing its best Olympic outing of six medals and 32nd spot on the overall table in Atlanta, United States, in 1996 looks slim. Apart from lack of adequate preparation ahead of the competition which takes place every four years, facilities to put athletes in proper shape were either unavailable or in horrific conditions despite a bogus annual budget for sports in the country.
For example, in boxing, a sport which gave the country her very first medal at the Games in 1964 when Nojim Mayegun won bronze in the men’s light-middleweight, Nigeria would be represented by only one person – Efe Ajagba, reducing the nation’s chances of picking a prize in a sport it had performed fairly well over the years. But even with the abundance of talent splashed all across the country, the last time Nigeria won a medal in boxing at the Games was in 1996. Competing in the heavyweight category, Ajagba will have to bank on sheer luck to make a good impression in Brazil.
“I must confess I am not too happy because I am the only one who qualified for the Olympics games. You know that to have a lot of boxers qualify would have been better and it would have been an encouragement.
“However, I would use this opportunity to shine and encourage other boxers that were unable to qualify. I know it’s going to be tough, but I am trusting God to see me through,” he said in one interview before the contingent departed for Rio.
Like many sports where Nigeria was once known to be a force to reckon with at continental and international level, poor administration and lack of developmental programmes have reduced boxing to a shadow of itself.
Former national boxing coach, Isaac Ikhuoria, while expressing disappointment at the development, says the situation if not quickly addressed, could get to a stage where the country is not able to present boxers for major competitions again.
“I am not happy about what is happening to boxing; it’s not a good omen for us. One of the major causes of this problem is that there are no regular competitions to keep boxers in shape as a result of poor funding. I expected that apart from qualifiers, efforts would also be intensified in having more competitions in place. Without resolving this issue, things might not improve,” he said.
During a recent visit to the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, one of the major breeding grounds for talents in boxing and other sports in the country, our correspondent observed that most of the facilities used to train boxers were in complete shambles. Apart from the worn-out nature of the punching bags, the general boxing arena was in a state of utmost decay. The sight is a testament of how one of Nigeria’s most revered sports has continued to suffer neglect despite the huge funds the Ministry had received over the years.
“Boxing is the sport that first put Nigeria’s name on the world map. Long before the country became known with football, it had brought glory to Nigeria in different ways. But the lack of support over the years has led to the decline in performance and interest.
“Most boxing arenas across the country are no longer safe and this has prevented fans from coming to watch fights. To take boxing back to its glorious days, both the Nigerian Amateur Boxing Association and Nigerian Boxing Board of Control need to shape up. They must put up programmes to discover, nurture and promote these young Nigerian talents,” Kabiru Akano, a promoter of the sports told Saturday PUNCH.
Like boxing, only one athlete would fly Nigeria’s flag in weightlifting, an event Nigeria was reputed for dominating and doing well in the past. Oluwatoyin Adesami, who competes in 107kg, now carries the country’s only medal hope in the category.
Ade Babajide, a former professional weightlifter, told Saturday PUNCH that the sport is currently in the closing stages of its complete collapse in Nigeria.
He said if not quickly rescued, the country might not win anything in major weightlifting competitions in the future.
“We are not just a serious country. All the funds meant to develop weightlifting has always ended up in private pockets rather than used to actually improve the sport and its athletes. Go to the gym at the National Stadium to see things for yourself, everywhere is in a mess, nobody is motivated to give their best. If we continue like this, very soon we would not even be qualifying for major competitions,” he said.
But apart from boxing and weightlifting, swimming is another sport that has continued to suffer neglect despite the abundance of talents available in the country. Blessed with a vast water body, the lack of programmes to spot talents and nurture them into world champions has continued to rob the nation of the recognition it should get in this area.
Making its first appearance at the Olympics this year after an eight-year absence, Nigeria would be represented by only two swimmers in Brazil – Samson Opuakpo and Rachael Tonjor. While the former competes in the men’s 50m freestyle, the latter who fought for honours in the women’s 100m breaststroke, has already crashed out of the Games.
Swimming coach, Michael Idemu, blames the problem on corruption and mismanagement of funds meant for nurturing talents and building and maintaining facilities used to train swimmers over the years.
According to him, even though the swimming pool inside the National Stadium in Lagos, which was built in 1972 and hosted major competitions including the 1973 All Africa Games now wears a new look after undergoing rehabilitation following its neglect for almost 20 years, other similar facilities across the country remain in questionable conditions.
“It has taken the intervention of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development this time for the Olympic-sized swimming pool at the National Stadium in Lagos to be renovated. That facility has been neglected for close to 20 years with all the equipment vandalised and stolen by rogues.
“But there are several other places the authorities have to look at if we are to reap the abundance of talent we boast in swimming. The talents are everywhere, it is just for you to spot them and refine them into world champions. This will happen if the corruption in the sector can be curbed.
“Many of our athletes have been sacrificing and are still willing to sacrifice; only a little pat on the back is all they desire. But in Nigeria, it is easier to approve a budget for a ‘ghost’ constituency project than for a sports project that would bring glory to the country,” he said.
A look into the 2016 budget of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development shows how the country is still far away from achieving any tangible development in sports especially the erection of major facilities to nurture talents across the nation.
For instance, of the total N75.4bn allocated to the Ministry, only a paltry N4.6bn is earmarked for capital expenditure – that is the building of needed training facilities like football pitches, basket courts, athletics tracks and fully equipped halls for indoor games like table tennis, boxing, weightlifting and others – while a whopping N70.8bn is budgeted for recurrent expenditure – payment of salaries and other expenses related to running the day to day affairs of the ministry.
Apart from the secretariat of the Ministry itself, there are four wings under it – Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, National Youth Service Corps, Nigeria Football Federation, and the Nigeria Institute for Sports.
The Youth and Sports Development Ministry budgeted N27, 798,124 for “Local Training,” while the amount budgeted for transportation for this training is N47, 369,208. There is also a provision for transportation for an “International Training,” N12, 749,191 but there is no provision in the budget for the “International Training.”
There are three provisions for the “Purchase of Office Furniture and Fittings,” and they are allocated N38, 257,300, N181, 701,880 and N29, 400,000 respectively. There are also two provisions for “Purchase of Library Books and Equipment,” allocated N26, 060,500 and N11, 764,000 respectively.
When summed up, the total for the purchase of books alone for the Ministry itself amounts to N37, 824, 500 – more than the amount 37 Federal Universities and 25 Federal Polytechnics spend to purchase the same items in a year.
The Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre has a capital expenditure of N74,876,501, and it is broken down as follows; N23,958,000 for the construction/provision of housing, N35,462,881 for the construction/provision of libraries, and yet another N15,455,620 for the construction/provision of housing.
Apart from N1, 519, 222 listed as ‘international training’ for the Nigerian Football Federation, the breakdown of the rest of the other sum under the ‘capital expenditure’ was not expressly stated.
Analyst, Sadiq Ahmed, says the huge amount allocated for the sector in the annual national budget has little or no impact on sports development in the country.
According to him, earmarking the chunk of the budget for payment of salaries and purchase of books and other items that are irrelevant at the detriment of necessary facilities and welfare of athletes is totally unacceptable.
“We cannot move forward as a society if we continue this way. The budget breakdown for the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development should trouble every lover of sports in the country because with what we have, no meaningful development can actually take place. But if the funds are used sincerely for what they are approved for, things could be a bit better. However, I see things remaining like this for some time,” he said.
In the wake of Nigeria’s embarrassing performance at the Olympics in London, United Kingdom, four years ago, about N2.2bn was budgeted for the 51 athletes that participated at the Games. But sadly much of that money was used to fly and entertain dozens of government officials who had no business at the competition.
Between 2010 and 2015, at least N20bn had been spent on capital projects in the sports sector under the yearly budget received by the Ministry. In spite of such whopping allocation, many sports facilities remain in shambles while athletes and coaches have continued to be robbed of entitlements for their efforts during this period.
Apart from the misappropriation of funds, Ahmed told Saturday PUNCH that unstable government policies and the constant changing of ministers of sports is one of the major causes of many of the problems witnessed in the sector today.
For example, since 1999 when the country returned to civil rule, Nigeria has had 14 sports ministers within the period – an average of one every 14 months. Incumbent Minister, Solomon Dalung, agrees that the phenomenon is one of the biggest factors affecting sports development in the country.
“I think the major problem of sports is that most of the sports ministers have hardly stayed longer than 18 months.
“Critical decisions of renovation and construction of major structures cannot be done within six months. Most things have remained largely unattended to because of lack of stable leadership in the ministry. The attitude of those responsible has also been found wanting,” Dalung, who has come under heavy knocks for the controversy that has trailed Nigeria’s participation at Brazil, said.
Like Ahmed, many observers of events believe that regardless of the performance of Nigeria’s athletes at this year’s Olympic Games, the flaws in the management of sports that recent controversies had exposed would linger for a long time.
