The National Conscience Party in Katsina
State has urged the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress to be
more forthcoming in its responsibilities to workers’ welfare in the
state.
The NCP in a letter dated September 15,
2016 to the state NLC Chairman, Tenumu Saulawa, copies of which were
made available to journalists in Katsina on Sunday, maintained that the
NLC had not reacted appropriately to recent developments concerning
workers’ welfare in the state.
The party cited a recent screening of workers in the state as well as their (workers’) experience during the last Eid-el-Kabir, as areas it expected the NLC intervention and reaction.
The letter signed by the party’s
chairman in the state, Abdulmumin Sani, urged the workers’ body to reach
out to affiliate unions and “find an alternative method” of cushioning
the hardships allegedly being faced daily by workers in the state.
The letter read in part, “We are aware
that monthly check-off dues are being deducted and they run into
millions of naira. Yet, little or nothing is done with it. It is our own
way of waking you up from your sleep so that you will stand up for the
right of workers to a decent living.”
When contacted, the state NLC chairman
said he had not seen the letter, adding that he travelled to Benin, Edo
State on official matters and only returned to Katsina at the weekend.
“When I see the letter and its content, I will make appropriate comment,” he said over the phone.
