The African Union is to launch a passport promising visa-free travel around the African continent
– The passport is expected to be made eligible to all Africans in the next three years
Nowadays African passport owners have to apply for visa to visit at least 30 countries on the continent.
However, it seems that things are slowly but changing as the African Union is planning to launch a pan-African electronic passport.
African heads of state and top AU officials will be the first to receive the long-awaited travel document.
According to the AU Deputy Chairman Erastus Mwencha, the passport opening borders is planned to be issued to all eligible Africans in the next three years.
In February 2016, Nigerian citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 45 countries and territories, ranking the Nigerian passport 92nd in the world according to the Visa Restrictions Index.
