EFCC arrests House of Reps member

An Akwa Ibom state House of Reps member, Nse Bassey Ekpenyong has been arrested by the EFCC
– He was arrested for his alleged involvement in certificate forgery scam
– Though the lawmaker had been released on bail, investigations were still ongoing
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Nse Bassey Ekpenyong, a member of the House of Representatives (Oron Constituency, Akwa Ibom State), in connection to a certificate forgery scam.
A non-governmental organization petitioned the anti-graft agency, alleging that Ekpenyong committed perjury and financial crimes, Sahara Reporters reports.
The NGO accused him of submitting a forged Ordinary National Diploma and statement of result from the Abia state Polytechnic to the Independent National Electoral Commission in the build-up to the 2015 National Assembly election.
accused of fraudulently obtaining salaries, allowances and other financial benefits from his contrived certificate.
Investigations by the EFCC showed that Ekpenyong did not attend the Polytechnic as alleged by the petitioner and the Ordinary National Diploma did not emanate from the institution.
He has been released on bail while investigations are still ongoing.
The anti-graft agency is determined to bring corrupt individuals to book.
Sylvester Ezeani, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Abia state, was interrogated by EFCC operatives on Tuesday, July 19, for his role in the disbursement of N23bn during the 2015 election.
