Dead and retired civil servants still receive salaries in Lagos

Deceased and retired civil servants still receive salaries in local governments councils in Lagos state, a recent staff audit has revealed.
An audit report in Lagos state has revealed fraudulent salaries paid to dead and retired civil servants
The audit, carried out by the auditor-general for local governments between April and June 2016, brought out astonishing revelations.
It showed that salaries were still being paid to dead and retired civil servants as their names were still on the nominal role.
During the period under review, it was discovered that N35.428 million was fraudulently paid to dead civil servants and retirees at various local government councils and local government education authorities after their terminal dates.
In April, it was revealed that N34.88 million was paid to dead and retired officers after their terminal dates.
Also, in May, N503, 536 was recovered from another set of deceased and retired officers in some local governments and education authorities while in June, N42,192 was recovered from the same deceased and retired officers.
Recall that in the same exercise carried out by the same office in the first quarter of this year, about 25 million fraudulently paid to dead and retired civil servants at various local governments and education authorities was discovered.
This discovery is coming at a time the state government says it is working tirelessly to raise its budget size in the next few years.
